ROOTED IN PURPOSE. SERVED WITH CARE

Daybreak was created as a warm local space where people can slow down, connect, and enjoy drinks made with intention. From our beginnings in Rwanda to our community here today, everything we serve is about bringing people together—one cup at a time.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Before the Rwandan Civil War in 1994, coffee was a big thing, but after years of fighting and genocide, the industry – and trust between neighboring farmers – collapsed. To help create employment opportunities and bring people together, our founder, Jonathan Golden, built the first LTH coffee washing station in the Ruli farming region. He also bought a 12lb primo roaster and hired a consultant to teach him how to roast beans, thinking that if this idea didn’t work, he’d at least have coffee to give as gifts for the next 20 years.

Thankfully, it did work! Soon, farmers who hadn’t spoken to each other in years worked side-by-side in the coffee fields.

Today, we’ve worked with more than 10,000 farmers, selling our specialty beans to coffee lovers worldwide, have cafes in the U.S., support development initiatives in our farming communities, and have helped change countless lives on both sides of the Atlantic. We call this Collaborative Trade™. Along with co-laboring with farmers and paying fair wages, we also work closely with farming communities in Rwanda through our Do Good Initiative projects that support locally-organized development programs.

Creating purposeful work and cultivating flourishing communities is more than just part of our mission. It’s a movement. That may sound like a lot for a humble cup of coffee, but we’re up for the challenge!
